Good News for Speakers in 2026 (With a Few Strings Attached)

The latest American Express Global Business Travel meetings forecast for 2026 is good news for professional speakers — with a few important caveats.

First, the headline: planners are optimistic again. Confidence about meetings and events in 2026 is the highest it’s been in five years. In-person meetings aren’t just “back,” they’re valued. Organizations see live events as essential for connection, culture, learning, and alignment. That’s encouraging.

But here’s where it gets interesting for speakers.

Attendee experience is now the top priority.
Planners are very clear: content alone isn’t enough. The focus is on how attendees feel—engagement, interaction, networking, personalization, and moments that stick. That’s a shift away from long lecture-style keynotes and toward experiences that feel participatory and human.

For speakers, this is a big signal. The more interactive, story-driven, engagement-oriented, or workshop-style your session is, the more attractive you are to planners right now. If your talk can spark conversation, connection, or behavior change, you’re aligning with what the market wants. My clients tell me this is what they are constantly hearing,

Budgets are up… and still tight.
Yes, many planners report modest budget increases for 2026. At the same time, rising costs (venues, food, travel) remain their biggest headache. Translation: they’re spending money — but they’re being careful.

That means speakers are under greater pressure to articulate the ROI of their programs. This doesn’t mean you should automatically lower your fee; it’s about helping planners justify it by articulating clear outcomes, relevance, and what happens after the keynote matters more than ever. You have heard me refer to outcome marketing and selling, and I’ll keep preaching it.

AI has moved from novelty to normal.
About half of planners expect to use AI throughout the event lifecycle — from planning agendas and marketing events to personalizing attendee experiences and analyzing results afterward.

For speakers, this shows up in two ways:

  1. Planners are using AI to match speakers to audiences.
  2. They’re increasingly comfortable with speakers who use innovative tools to tailor content, follow up with attendees, and extend impact beyond the stage.

ROI is evolving into “Return on Experience.”
Planners still care about results, but they’re measuring success more holistically—engagement, energy, takeaways, and whether the experience moved people.

Bottom line?
2026 favors speakers who deliver experiences, not speeches — who understand the business context, respect budget realities, and help planners look good internally. If you can do that, the market is very much in your favor.
