Remember when the internet first arrived in our lives? (I was a blonde back then.) I remember vividly how some were adamant it would never be allowed in schools. Imagine that! Fast forward, and now it’s part of the fabric of education, business, and nearly every aspect of daily life. Today, we’re hearing similar resistance to artificial intelligence (AI). Spoiler alert: AI is already here, and it’s not going anywhere. The choice is simple—embrace it or get left behind.
Let’s be clear, though: there’s a reason it’s called “artificial” intelligence. Current AI models come with notable limitations, especially when it comes to understanding human emotions. They lack genuine emotional experience—a crucial for anyone whose success depends on emotional connection – like speakers. Without connecting with audiences intellectually and emotionally, we risk losing our impact and our business.
AI struggles with emotions because it doesn’t fully grasp the intricate stories behind people’s feelings and challenges. Emotions are nuanced; they’re shaped by our experiences, environment, and interactions. Right now, AI systems can’t accurately piece together these complexities, leading to potential misunderstandings. As speakers, it’s our role to make these connections and bring meaning to our audience’s emotions.
When asked about AI, I emphasize that it’s a tool—not the endgame. If our speeches or writing lack genuine emotion, we lose our ability to truly connect. We lose our uniqueness.
Success comes to those who are able to skillfully blend artificial intelligence with authentic human insight.
