The 5 Biggest Challenges to Getting Paid Speaking Engagements (and tactics that actually work)

I talk with professional speakers every week who are talented, credible, and experienced, yet still struggling to get paid speaking engagements.

Here are the five biggest challenges I see—and the tactics that consistently move the needle.

1. Unclear Positioning

The challenge:
If a meeting planner can’t immediately answer who you’re for and what’s the ROI of working with you, you’re invisible. Generic expertise doesn’t get bought. Outcomes do.

The tactic:
Lock in a clear, planner-friendly positioning statement that:

  • Names a specific audience
  • Promises a business-relevant outcome
  • Is short enough to say without explaining

2. Selling Content Instead of Outcomes

The challenge:
Speakers love their content. Buyers love results. When you lead with topics, frameworks, or passion, planners lose interest.

The tactic:
Translate your content into measurable outcomes:

  • What changes after you leave the stage?
  • What behaviors shift?
  • What problem(s) get solved?

The more you speak in outcomes, the easier the fee conversation becomes

3. Weak or Inconsistent Marketing Presence

The challenge:

Relying on inbound inquiries, social media likes, or “being visible” is not a strategy. It’s hope.

The tactic:

Proactive, targeted outreach.

  • Identify industries and associations that already buy speakers like you
  • Build relationships with decision-makers before they need a speaker
  • Stay top-of-mind with value, not pitches

You don’t need more content. You need aligned content that reinforces why you’re the right choice.

4. Fee Hesitation

The challenge:
Many speakers either:

  • Avoid fee conversations
  • Apologize for their price
  • Or quote a number without qualifying the buyer

All three cost you money—or the booking.

The tactic:

Lead the fee conversation with calm authority.

  • Know your standard fee
  • Ask about budget without apology
  • Tie your fee to outcomes, not time on stage

Confidence is clarity. Money follows clarity. If they see the value, the fee conversation is easier.

5. No Follow-Up Strategy (After the Gig or the Call)

Too many speakers get paid once, and start from zero every time.

The fix:
Create continuity.

  • Follow-up programs – “Aftercare” (last chapter in Book More Business: Make MORE Money Speaking
  • Reinforcement sessions
  • Consulting, licensing, or ongoing support

This is how you stabilize income.

Final Thought

Getting paid to speak is about:
Clear positioning. Relevant outcomes. Strong relationships. Fee confidence. And smart follow-up.

When those are in place, getting booked becomes a lot less mysterious, and a lot more predictable.
