Your Content Is Your Livelihood. Is It Protected From AI?

If you’re a professional speaker, your presentation is more than what you say on stage. It’s your framework, your stories, your language, and your years of testing what works. It’s intellectual property – and right now, most speaker agreements say nothing about what happens to that content once AI enters the picture.

That gap should concern you.

Jaime Nolan, CEO of the National Speakers Association, has written about this because so many in our industry are dealing with AI in the marketplace.

The problem:

Someone attends your session, records it (or gets the transcript), and runs it through AI to “repurpose” it— into a blog post, a course, or a competing keynote. A few years ago, that took real effort. Today it takes minutes.

Learning from your talk? That’s the whole point of speaking. Turning your talk into new content without asking you first? That’s a different thing entirely — even when it’s done with AI, and even when you get a courtesy mention.

What you can do about it:

You don’t need a lawyer to start protecting yourself. You need a clause in your speaking agreement that says so, plainly, and you need to use it now. Here’s language I’ve developed and shared with my own clients:

Use of AI and Speaker Content – my clause

Please don’t use AI to rewrite, repurpose, expand, or create new materials from the Speaker’s presentation, slides, recordings, transcripts, or other content without the Speaker’s written permission.

Learning from the presentation is encouraged. Turning it into new content, even with AI, isn’t. Giving credit is not the same as getting permission.

I’m not an attorney, and this isn’t a substitute for legal advice. But it’s a clear, low-friction way to put buyers and meeting planners on notice about your expectations, and it starts a conversation before there’s a problem, not after. Use it now, and have a lawyer review it if you wish.

The bottom line

AI isn’t going away, and neither is the temptation to treat a speaker’s content as free raw material. Your agreements should catch up to that reality. Add the language now, have a lawyer review it if you wish, and protect the work you’ve spent years building.
