Make Your Audience Uncomfortable!

They’re Not Buying Your Speech. They’re Buying the Transformation.

Let’s reframe how you think about your impact as a speaker.

When an audience member walks away from a presentation, what stays with them isn’t your slides or your clever transitions. What stays, what changes them, is how they felt understood. How something shifted inside them that they can’t quite explain but feel with absolute certainty.

That’s transformation. That’s the outcome your clients are actually buying.

Transformation is rarely comfortable – neither for the audience nor for us as speakers. Yet, it’s within the discomfort that the deepest value can emerge.

Talking at people vs. reaching them

The speakers who build real careers – the ones who get rebooked and referrals – don’t just deliver information. They create an experience where the audience feels met. Met in the language of their own lives, their own jobs, their own fears, their own hopes.

That’s the differentiator that sets you apart.

The transformation and outcome are the product.

When you’re positioning yourself, the most important question you can answer is: What transformation do I deliver, and what’s the outcome for my audience?

Not what topics you cover. Not your credentials. What changes for an audience because you were in the room? What do they do differently on Monday morning? That’s what the meeting planner is trying to buy when they call you. You all have heard me talk about this in terms of creating your positioning statement and outcome statements.

Fear is not a disqualifier.

Here’s something else worth saying, especially to speakers earlier in their careers.

Courage in this business isn’t the absence of fear. It’s taking the stage, or picking up the phone to call a prospect, or putting out a new program, or raising your fee, despite the fear. The most experienced speakers I know still get nervous. What changed for them isn’t that the fear went away. It’s that they developed the tools, the confidence, and the clarity of message to move forward anyway.

If you’ve hesitated to declare your niche, raise your fee, or pursue a new market, remember hesitation isn’t a stop sign; it’s part of the process.

So, what’s your transformation?

If someone asked you right now, “What transformation do your audiences experience?”, could you answer it in one or two sentences without defaulting to a list of topics?

If not, that’s the work. That’s the conversation worth having. Because once you can articulate that clearly, everything else – your marketing, your outreach, your conversations with meeting professionals and decision makers – gets easier.

You’re not selling a speech. You’re selling what happens to people because of it. I call it the “ROI of you”.

That clarity is worth every bit of effort it takes to achieve.

The idea for this post was inspired by one of my favorite speakers – one I’m lucky enough to hear every week – Rev. Gary Noonan. If his words sparked something for me, I have a feeling they’ll do the same for you.
